Sunset Peak is part of Stage 2 of the Lantau Trail and is a popular route. I've walked this trail before and in fact it was one of my first hikes, being tackled in the usual way starting from Mui Wo in the afternoon. Prior to that I had walked the relatively easy route from Discovery Bay to Mui Wo and even then my legs wobbled on the downward section. Nearly two years later, my legs have accumulated many miles and are like steel springs!
This section is generally considered challenging and is relentlessly uphill including the climb up to Sunset Peak, the third highest peak in Hong Kong. There is very little cover and normally would require plenty of sun protection but on this occasion I dispensed with that sensible precaution. A key piece of kit this time was a head lamp as the intention was to make the climb at night and get to the top for sunrise.
The night was a stinker as it rained. I got a taxi from Tung Chung to Pak Kung Au at the split between stage 2 and 3 of the Lantau Trail. Pak Kung Au is the the gap separating north and south Lantau and easily reached even at 4 AM meaning that the trail is tackled from west to east and finishing at Mui Wo in time for the ferries.
Ascending at night was tricky and took longer than expected. When I get to the top I saw the glow of lamps from a group that had already made the climb and were huddling under a plastic sheet to keep awaiting the warming rays of the sun from a glorious sunrise.
Not likely. It had been raining. I was at cloud level. No sun to be seen here. All that was seen was the whitening mist as the sun somewhere above was shining.
So no sunrise on Sunset Peak today.
As the sun burned off the mist it made the going easier and the trail was quite an easy descent all the way down to Mui Wo. The only thing of note was that leaches were lurking in the wet grass overhanding the trail. As I was plodding away I saw that the top of my sock was soaked in blood and i found the critter attached to my ankle. A burst of bug spray made the creature let go and probably regurgitate it's stomach contents into me.
